DESCRIPTION OF SPECIALTY
A Biomedical Laboratory Technician is a healthcare professional who organizes and prepares the workplace for examinations, informs patients or their care staff about how to collect material or prepare for testing, and, when necessary, collects, accepts, and evaluates this material. Within the limits of his or her competence, the technician participates in the examination of all laboratory materials, evaluates the results, and documents the findings.
The specialty of Biomedical Laboratory Technician is topical and highly significant, as without laboratory examinations doctors cannot establish an accurate diagnosis for patients.
Biomedical Laboratory Technicians continuously contribute to the development of their field, improve their knowledge and skills, and engage in professional education within the specialty.
MAIN PROFESSIONAL TASKS OF A BIOMEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
The biomedical laboratory technician ensures that practical skills, abilities, theoretical knowledge, and professional attitude conform to the professional standard of the specialty, the requirements of the labor market, and international practice. The technician supports the acquisition of students’ professional knowledge and skills in laboratory diagnostics, including the investigation of biological, biochemical, microbiological, clinical, biophysical, immunological, serological, immunohaematological, haematological, coagulation, immunochemical, cytological, histological, genetic, and other materials.
The technician contributes to the development of students’ self‑competence, social and value competence, responsibility, and innovative competence, preparing them for active citizenship in a democratic society, while also fostering communication and teamwork skills. Furthermore, the biomedical laboratory technician promotes responsibility among future specialists for maintaining and improving their professional qualifications, continuously enhancing their knowledge and skills, and supporting the advancement of the profession.
GOAL OF THE STUDY PROGRAM
To prepare highly qualified and modernly educated biomedical laboratory technicians who are competent and competitive in the labor market. The program ensures the acquisition of professional theoretical and practical knowledge and skills, while fostering the development of free, responsible, and creative personalities.
PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION OF STUDY PROGRAM
The practical implementation of the Biomedical Laboratory Technician study program takes place in the college’s laboratories and classrooms, as well as in practice bases under clinical conditions. The main practice bases include Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital, Jūrmala Hospital, Ltd. Central Laboratory, and Ltd. E. Gulbja Laboratory, along with other laboratories across Latvia.
